The State of Christian Rock

This scares me, and I hope it's just some exec at Word who's gone insane, but I fear that it isn't. Check out Track 13 on X 2004, which is supposed to be a collection of the year's best Christian alternative/rock hits.

*sigh of relief* Chancey, you shouldn't scare a person(s?) like that! I thought it would be something perticularly bad (Ozzie, Eminem.... BRITNEY SPEARS!!! D:) but lo and behold, it was just a brainless Christian boy band. *whew* Ya had me scared there, buddy.

Have you heard the revamped Plus One? They really have lost the boy band thing and gone rock. "I'm a poor man, walking down the road. The straight and narrow is leading me to gold."

That hook is a real grabber!

I think I've heard one or two tracks from the CD, and I must admit, they've definitely improved since they were a boy band. But . . . They're still on the wrong side of the Newsboys for me. I guess I'm starting to get discouraged with where Christian music is going. I'm still looking for that late '90's punk stuff that basically died when Ghoti Hook broke up. There are still some bands carrying on in that vein (Dogwood, Side Walk Slam, Stretch Arm Strong), there are a couple very promising up-and-comers (Thousand Foot Krutch, Staple), and the Supertones and Blindside are always at the top of their game, but a lot of the stuff that's popular now just doesn't appeal to me. KJ-52, Big Dismal, Seven Places, Jeremy Camp, Superchick just aren't my thing and although I appreciate what they're doing, I wince when I see them as the representatives of alternative Christian music. Plus One is basically my poster child for that feeling. RIP Ghoti Hook, Five Iron Frenzy, Hangnail, EDL, with Bleach, Calibretto, The Evaluation, and others soon to follow. :(
